We had a counseling session for children with special needs last week. A specialist in the field of mental retardation spoke on the issues of such children.
It included:
·        Overview of mental retardation
·        symptoms of mental retardation
·        causes of the mental retardation
·        How to diagnose intellectual disability
·        How to overcome mental retardation
·        General guidance on caring for children with special needs.
At last the doctor strongly asked from the parents of children with special needs to come for regular check-ups which will be the most important way of coping with mental retardation. Parents discussed with the doctor about their children. So it was very useful for them to get valuable advice from a doctor who is specialized in the field.
Thank you for making this possible.

Sweaters and Jerkins to School children and Old people

Past three months it has been a hard time for the children and old people in the hill country, after 19 years people have experienced monsoon rains and wind and very cold weather in Nuwara Eliya district. So many requested for food items, clothes and support to repair their roofs and etc.  As an essential need for warm clothes we applied to the Falkoping Church in Sweden. We are so much thankful they have supported us immediately. We could buy bale bundles (Warm clothes) so we could issue sweaters and jerkins among the our school children and old people.

Past Students Visit to Smyrna Mission School

Periyasami Vijeraj(left) and Periyannan Palaniyandi have been students at SMS in the late 80's and Vijeraj is a very successful building contractor now with 25 workers under him.  Palaniyandi is assisting him.  Vijeraj was invited by the principal to talk to the current student body about his experiences during school and after. It was very interesting and inspiring for the children as it gave them hope that they too can become successful despite having to go through a lot of hardship in their lives in the beginning.

Children had a lot of questions to ask them as well.  He promised to teach the boys to do electric work, cement block making and flower pot making.

Talking to Ajith about his plans for the future - an immediate bond :)

Looking froward to gathering the Alumni of SMS and building a network of supporters.  Excited for the future of SMS!
